Join us to hear the true story of three extraordinary women: Constance, Norma, and Fleurette Kopp, women in law enforcement whose exploits as crime-fighters and detectives in Bergen County, New Jersey, made newspapers nationwide. The first woman deputy sheriff in the country, Constance Kopp, alongside her sisters Norma and Fleurette, are the real women behind Amy Stewart’s Kopp Sisters novels, starting with Girl Waits With Gun. In 2012, Stewart stumbled across a 1914 newspaper article about them and went on to uncover their amazing history through genealogical archives, court records, old newspapers, and interviews with family members. From their story and her painstaking research, she wrote a critically acclaimed series about the Kopp sisters and their adventures in crime-fighting. Stewart will take us into her research and writing process to bring history to life, and share photographs and stories about these remarkable women and the fascinating historical background that shaped their world a hundred years ago.

Amy Stewart is the New York Times best-selling author of The Drunken Botanist, Wicked Plants, and several other popular nonfiction titles about the natural world. She’s also written several novels in her beloved Kopp Sisters series, which are based on the true story of one of America’s first female deputy sheriffs and her two rambunctious sisters. Her books have sold over a million copies worldwide and have been translated into 18 languages. She lives in Portland with her husband Scott Brown, a rare book dealer who can usually be found at his shop, Downtown Brown Books.
