Sustainability & Community Resilience
Through a variety of programs, the County works to conserve the vitality and continued enjoyment of natural resources and outdoor areas. In rural communities, the preservation of open space prevents sprawling development from overtaking natural lands. In suburban and urban areas, protection from flooding and clean-up of polluted sites improves the health of residents and local ecosystems. In addition, sustainable practices which can include developing clean energy sources, applying green building techniques, and limiting waste, reduce the effects of pollution, habitat destruction, and fossil fuel emissions.
Sustainability and Community Resilience Strategic Initiatives explore ways the County can prepare for and adapt to climate change and other hazards. These Strategic Initiatives look at methods to decrease and manage waste, protect the environment and natural resources, and reduce the County's environmental footprint.
Sustainability and Community Resilience Strategic Initiatives include:
- Implement a comprehensive “Resilient Middlesex” initiative.
- Reduce energy consumption and promote the use of renewable energy sources.
- Improve the reliability and efficiency of existing water and sewer infrastructure and promote leading practices in septic system management.
- Expand the use of green infrastructure approaches for water management.
- Expand waste reduction and recycling efforts.
- Preserve wildlife habitat and natural resources.
- Encourage sustainable building and business practices.
- Improve the stewardship of environmental resources.
- Improve the sustainability of County facilities and operations.
