Transportation and Mobility

Transportation

Access to reliable, efficient, and safe transportation is a critical component of quality of life, economic opportunity, and positive health outcomes. Middlesex County's extensive transportation assets, including accessible public transit service, many state and interstate highways, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities, enable residents, visitors, and industry to meet their daily travel needs as well as reach many popular destinations, including major metropolitan and recreational areas. At the same time, parts of the transportation system are congested, inefficient, and incomplete. Improvements are needed to better connect to where residents, workers, and visitors need to go.

Transportation and Mobility Strategic Initiatives explore ways to improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the transportation system throughout the County. These strategic initiatives explore options to increase access to transit and equitable, public, and shared mobility options; improve freight transportation; and prepare the County for emerging innovations in transportation such as electric, automated, and connected vehicles.

Strategic initiatives within Transportation and Mobility include:

  • Implement the first countywide Vision Zero initiative in New Jersey.
  • Make it easier and safer for everyone to walk and bike.
  • Increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of transportation system investments.
  • Enhance and expand public transit and community transportation services.
  • Improve goods movement and mitigate the negative impacts of trucks.
  • Reduce traffic congestion by strengthening travel demand management (TDM) efforts.
  • Improve the resilience of transportation to extreme weather and a changing climate.
  • Increase the share of County residents and businesses using electric vehicles (EVs).
  • Expand the use of "green infrastructure” to reduce the heat and stormwater impacts of transportation facilities.
  • Establish Middlesex County as a national leader in deploying advanced transportation system technologies, including connected and automated vehicles (CAVs).
