Naturalization Records

Naturalization is a legal process by which a foreign-born person can become a citizen of the United States. Three primary documents are part of the naturalization process: Declaration of Intention (commonly called “first papers”), Petition for Naturalization, and finally the Certificate of United States Citizenship or Naturalization. The County Clerk's office has petitions of naturalization and declarations of intent on file for individuals who became United States citizens at the Middlesex County Courthouse from 1806 through 1991.

To search the naturalization records in Middlesex County, you must submit a written request to the County Clerk’s Office. You can call the office at 732-745-3405 for more information on where to send your request. The request should include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Name of person in question (include all possible names and spellings)
  • Date of birth
  • Approximate date of naturalization
  • Address at time of naturalization
  • Petition number
