Office of Public Works

The Office of Public Works is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of all County roads within the jurisdiction of Middlesex County. This Office consists of five maintenance areas geographically located throughout Middlesex County and six specialty areas.

Middlesex County roads play an important role in the day-to-day lives of County residents. Residents depend on them for routine travel, business and commerce, and emergency services. The Office of Public Works is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of all County roads within the jurisdiction of Middlesex County. It provides essential services in the areas of asphalt maintenance, paving, bridge repair, street sweeping, traffic lights, paint striping, road inspections, and stormwater management.

The Division of Highways is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of 87 roads (over 320 miles of roadway), 168 bridges, 81 railroad structures (composed of 43 overhead bridges and 38 underpasses), and 171 intersections with traffic lights. The office also has a permit office through which it receives and reviews requests from contractors and utility companies to perform work on County roadways and rights-of-way.

The Division of Storm Water Management manages the storm drainage system for all Middlesex County roadways. This includes maintaining the water flow into and out of our storm drains, ensuring that anything that enters storm drains does not pollute our lakes, streams, or rivers.
