The County sponsors free educational workshops twice per year.

Learn from the Experts! Presenters from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service will teach you all about the composting process – what is composting, how to compost, materials that you can compost and those you cannot, and troubleshooting any issues you might encounter. This will be a live presentation followed by the opportunity to ask questions. Please email solidwaste@co.middlesex.nj.us, or call 732-745-4170 to register.

If you cannot attend the workshop, view the Backyard Compost PowerPoint Presentation or the November 2020 Backyard Compost Workshop Presentation Video.

Tips and Tricks

  • Place your compost bin on bare soil
  • Keep the material moist, like a wrung out sponge
  • Allow it to get air - stir or turn over regularly
  • Cut material being added into small pieces
  • Add a variety of materials
  • Cover added kitchen waste with brown material such as leaves
