Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)

PREACongress enacted the Prison Rape Elimination Act in 2003. The purpose of the Act is to establish a zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual assault / harassment in prisons, jails, lock-ups and other confinement facilities by developing and implementing national standards for the detection, prevention, reduction and punishment of prison rape.

The Act applies to all public and private institutions that house adult and/or juvenile offenders as well as community-based correctional agencies.

The Middlesex County Office of Adult Corrections & Youth Services is committed to:

  • The practice of “Zero-Tolerance” for any type of sexual violence and/or sexual misconduct committed by offenders and/or employees.
  • Ensuring a comprehensive level of commitment to the prevention of sexual violence and/or sexual misconduct as well as providing a safe environment for staff, offenders and visitors.
  • Establishing central coordination and oversight of all duties and activities related to addressing sexual violence and/or sexual misconduct and ensuring compliance with the requirements and intent of the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
