Septic System Program

All septic work requires approval from the Middlesex County Environmental Health Division (MCEHD).

  • New construction or alterations of an existing septic requires an application from an engineer for it to be submitted to our office.
    • Four copies of both the application and plan must be submitted for review.
    • Local township fees may apply, and the fees can be paid at the applicable township.
  • Direct replacements are allowed as repairs and require a permit from our office.
  • Any home additions or property renovations require approval from our department.
  • Failure to maintain a septic system can lead to a malfunctioning system which can result in a Notice of Violation and/or a Penalty Assessment
  • Refer to N.J.A.C. 7:9A for State law regarding subsurface sewage disposal systems. Any questions regarding any septic work should be directed to our office at 732-745-8480.
